In the early 1980s, the Schmidt Telescope at Palomar was again put
into service to photograph the whole sky.  This survey is not yet
complete but does feature much finer grain emulsions than the 
original survey.  Unfortunately, some of this gain is offset by the
significantly brighter skies at the site.  There is a large effort
planned to digitize these new survey plates.
